I hear several reasons why people never start jiujitsu or quit. While every once in a while, the reason is justified, most of the time, the real reason is a poor excuse. If you shift your mindset, you can look at your excuse and make it your motivation.
Here are some common reasons people never start jiujitsu:
Age.
They think they are too old, but we usually need to investigate this excuse further. Age itself doesn't mean much when it comes to training. Maybe they mean they have an old injury, their stamina isn't what it used to be, or they don't think they can learn something new.
If you have an old injury, we can work around it and find movement variations that keep you safe. If the old injury prevents you from competing, that's okay. You can still train without the intention of competing!
What better way to improve your stamina than by practicing jiujitsu? Your stamina will improve with time on the mats; when that happens, you will feel "younger."
The human brain will stay sharp and vibrant so long as you keep challenging it and continue to learn. Jiujitsu is like a game of chess; you must be able to play defense and offense simultaneously, not to mention while you roll, everything on your mind that is distracting fades away. You can just be mindful and focus on the present situation, Everyone can benefit from the mindfullness and the challenge of problem solving in jiujitsu.
Getting Injured.
I'm not going to pretend you won't get injured; It's a close-contact combat sport, but I will tell you there are steps you can take to prevent injury. The biggest thing is RECOVERY. You must recover adequately, drink water, get protein, and tap early. Don't try to do too much too quickly on the mats. On the flip side, and shifting your mindset, You are likely to get injured in life for many reasons. If you are an athlete, you will recover from injuries faster, and if you have a strong body, you are less likely to be injured (and less likely to get sick).
Time
We all have 24 hours in a day. If there is something you want to do with your time, you need to look at all your options and see if you don't have time or if you don't want to have time for jiujitsu. Our Edmond location has 545a, 7a, 10a, 5p,6p, and 7p classes. Start by coming in two times a week for any class time. We also offer private and semi-private classes to get you started. It comes down to managing and prioritizing your time. Are you spending your time now in a way that aligns with your values? JiuJitsu can benefit your mental and physical health and help you be a better version of yourself.
Overall, it is crucial to shift your mindset and look at the underlying reason you have an excuse. That goes for anything about your life that you want to change. Take hold of the reins of your life and find the reason to change, not an excuse to stay the same. Become a better version of yourself, and motivate others to do the same.
